On Deeper Poetry

On Deeper Poetry-Poetry by Guy Farmer

When I reflect on my poetry writing style, the word “deeper” frequently arises in my mind and manifests itself on the page.

What is “deeper poetry”? I’m not sure there is an exact definition, but I tend to think of it in terms of poems that go beneath the surface.

For example, I could write a poem about a relationship and examine what is happening outwardly, or I might suggest the subtext with the words I choose, the things that aren’t immediately apparent.

Because I write minimalist poems, I try to select words that evoke some kind of response, almost like when a certain smell conjures up a memory. I don’t write a lot of words or detail but I try to include enough for the reader to project her own meaning onto the work.

The reason I try to write deeper poetry is because I value what is not said as much as what is said in a stanza. I revel in the hints of meaning and nuance that exist between lines and omitted words.

I love going deeper in my writing because that’s where all the wonderful things in life reside, the moments and experiences that truly matter and define who we are.

How do you go deeper in your poetry?
