Short Free Verse Poems about the Human Condition

Conundrum

So, anyway, as I was saying,
I wasn’t sure if I should tell him
But, if I don’t, it’ll just get worse,
And that’s not good for anyone.
Of course, I could hold off and
Let him know on some other occasion,
But then there’s that thing that
Happened last time when I
Had the same conundrum.

Incarnate

A monument to one
Belief system
Unilaterally
Raised in front of
A public building.

Morally uplifting,
Righteous, sacred,
Manifestation of
Dictated certitude,
Relentless campaign.

Unidimensional truth,
Authoritarian imposition
Without regard for
Diversity, divergence.
Intolerance incarnate.

Mt. Olympus

Another night of
Crazed debauchery,
Using everything and
Everyone in sight
Without regard for
Anyone’s welfare,
View from the top
Intoxicating,
Invigorating,
Inciting.
Dead-eyed sociopaths
Plotting the next
Bilking of the rabble
As they revel
On Mt. Olympus.

Lack

A complete lack of empathy.
A wall that has no end,
Too high to climb over,
Obscures the landscape,
Separates people who
Might have been friends,
Prevents understanding,
Love, humanity.

Small

A weak person’s
Pathetic swagger
To hide insecurity.

A damaged person
Inflicting his pain
On everyone else.

A small person
Doing small things
For small reasons.

Dismiss

Whenever someone
Speaks the truth or
Threatens to pull back
The curtain,
Dismiss their thoughts
As folly.

Whenever someone is
Lying in a gutter
Begging for help,
Dismiss it as
The natural
Order of things.

Misery

She was so perfect.

Perfect eyes.
Perfect face.
Perfect hair.
Perfect body.
Perfect clothes.
Perfect career.
Perfect family.
Perfect house.
Perfect life.
Perfect everything.

Perfect misery.

Subservience

With beady eyes,
Strained countenances,
False smiles,
They promise perpetual
Happiness by giving
Up the self, a willful
Transfer of power
From within to without,
Grounded in fear,
Subservience, ignorance,
A denial of fact for
The comfort of
Unwavering certainty.
Do what we say,
Live the right way,
You will be rewarded
Some day, send your
Everything today.

Entry-Level

It’s just an entry-level gig
For teenagers looking to make
Money to buy clothes.

It’s not meant to be a
Full-time career or
Support a family.

It’s really just a way to
Get your foot in the door and
Later move up.

It would hurt companies too
Much if they paid more
Than they do.
